Find!NZ iOS4+ only

I've heard enough of complains about current version of Find!NZ. People want it back to iOS3. Of course I tried to make it compatible to 3.1.3 before releasing. The reason that I couldn't make it backward compatible was in-app SMS functionality which crashed the app on launching if the iOS version is not iOS4.0 or later.

I am sorry for people who can't install iOS4+ on their device. Find!NZ will be always free and no ads at all.

  1. Jay,

I understand your position. Perhaps you are not aware that Xcode has a feature where you can deploy an application which specifies a minimum version of Mac OS X or iOS, but can make use of selected features in later versions (up to the version of the SDK you are using). You need to check whether the features are available before invoking them, and adjust your user interface accordingly.

e.g. using iPhone SDK 4.0 you could target iOS 3.1.3 as the minimum version but still use features in iOS 4.0 if running on that OS.

This would allow a future version of Find!NZ to work on an iPad, where the text message feature is not available, and may not be available even after iOS 4.2 is released in November.

It would also allow Find!NZ to work on older iPhone and iPod Touch models that can't upgrade to iOS 4, while still making use of new features in iOS 4.

    See

    and

    for details.

In the meantime, the easiest solution for iPad or iPhone/iPod users running iOS 3.x is to exclude Find!NZ from that device and use the Zenbu web site directly (not as convenient as having the database on the device).

Or get hold of a copy of Find!NZ 2.3 out of your backups, avoid the "download all updates" button, and pay no attention to the permanently available update you can't use.

The App store doesn't have a method to ignore an available but incompatible update, which is something I'll be raising with Apple as a bug.

  4. Thanks for the quick reply, and I hope you can come up with a good solution.

I'm not an active iPhone developer, but I am a programmer and have several friends who are doing iPhone development, so I have some familiarity with the tools.

  5. No Go. I tried to deploy target set to 3.1.3. It seems like if I don't remove "MFMessageComposeViewControllerDelegate", It won't compile.
Well.. I tried and I don't want to remove SMS functionality.

  6. I have a plan for iPad users. yes. I am going to make Find!NZ HD for iPad. But I have a lot of things to do for my company first. So I can't guaranty the time of releasing. But It will happen before the end of this year at least.

  7. Hi Jay,

Just want say you have made an awesomely useful app - incredibly fast and easy to use :) one thing I'd like to see though is the inclusion of other gps programs other than tomtom - ie a lot of people are using Sygic's Aura as it's half the price as the former and works in Australia also. It would be fantastic if you could add a button for this (or perhaps just the one button for all gps apps and it searches for it - if you have more than one it brings up a menu to select the preferred option)

    Cheers,

    - Dan

  8. Hi Dan,

Thanks for good suggestion. But I don't have Sygic Aura. As you know, the Find!NZ is free app and I can't afford another navi app for just testing. I have Sygic AU/NZ app. So I will add functionality for that on next release version. I am very sorry for not supporting Sygic Aura.

  10. Have just loaded FindNZ on iPhone 4. Very good app, but I have noted a fair few errors in my area (and haven't looked further afield).

Is there a mechanism for feedback on errors in the database?
